ITINERARIES

The Pan Handle Meander

This relaxing Pan Handle Meander starts at either Seronga or Shakawe and cruises the Okavango river for a minimum of three nights.

This trip is available all year round, and includes activities such as birding, fishing and walks on several of the small islands to be found in the area.  With over 350 recorded bird species, any avid bird lover will be kept occupied for hours; October through to March being of special mention as it offers the opportunity to view our many annual migrants. During this period a wide variety of bee-eaters, including carmine, white-fronted, olive and little bee eaters, breed in holes dug into the river banks.

Birds to be found in the papyrus flanking the river channels include rufous-bellied heron and white-backed night heron (amongst others), lesser jacana, brown-throated weavers, painted snipe, and nesting on sand banks, or fishing using their lower mandible skimming through the water, the African skimmer. Then there is the fish eagle, marabou stork, marsh harrier, bradfield’s hornbill, and pel’s fishing owl, to name a few more.

Crocodiles basking on sandbanks, as well as hippopotamus are to be found in abundance throughout the Okavango Delta, and there is every chance of seeing a wide variety of general game from the vantage of our upper deck, as we glide through the pristine waters.

Keen fishermen can look forward to the catch-and-release option of up to 17 different species of fish, including the exciting, and ferocious, tiger fish.

Fishing equipment is available on a loss / replacement basis, and you are more than welcome to bring your own should you prefer. Fishing is generally good all year round, but worthy of mention is the annual barble run, which usually takes places sometime between October and December.

Cell phone reception is available in some areas that are close enough to villages to pick up signal, meaning that communication with the outside world is possible on a limited basis.
